Premier League Winter Fixtures: Congestion and What Fans Should Check

MPS MPS Editorial Desk • Published: September 2026 • 2 min read

A practical way to follow crowded winter schedules without treating fixture gaps as injury predictions.

Read the whole calendar

A league-only watchlist can hide a player's midweek cup commitments. When following a club through winter, check the matches before and after the league game you want to watch. Note the competition, kickoff date and whether the time is confirmed. A fixture is a club appointment, not a promise that an individual player will start.

What the research actually says

A systematic review by Page and colleagues found that injury incidence was generally higher during congested periods, with differences between studies. It does not establish a universal December injury increase of 35%. Recovery, training load and individual circumstances cannot be reduced to a single calendar statistic. We have removed that unsupported figure from this guide.

Worked example: compare the gaps

Imagine a club plays Sunday at 16:00, Wednesday at 20:00 and Saturday at 12:30, all in the same time zone. The kickoff-to-kickoff gaps are 76 hours and 64 hours 30 minutes. Those are illustrative calculations, not actual fixtures or recovery time: match duration, travel and training also occupy that interval. Use the comparison to spot a busy stretch, not diagnose fatigue.

Recheck before making plans

Broadcast selections and progress in other competitions can change league dates. Check the organizer's latest announcement before booking travel. On My Player Schedule, compare the weekly nationality view with the individual club card; different date windows can explain why they show different games. If a request fails, treat the visible list as incomplete rather than evidence that no match exists.
